Begijnhof

Beguinage or Begijnhof - is an ancient settlement of single women, which is widespread in the Netherlands in the 12th century. Beguinage in Amsterdam is one of the most famous. It is a complex of ancient buildings that formerly belonged to the monastery of Beguines. 

The first historical mention of this place there in 1389. Today Begijnhof complex includes 47 buildings, most of which are still inhabited by nuns. Despite the fact that outwardly resemble the structure of the building 17-18 centuries, still preserved in their medieval skeletons. 

Of particular interest to visitors is black Houten Heus. This wooden house is the oldest not only in the Begijnhof, but throughout Amsterdam. Many people come to Begijnhof, to visit the Church of England, located in the courtyard Beguinage. Excursions and large groups of people banned.
